Why offline play still matters in 2024
I travel through a lot of dead zones — trains, tunnels, that one cafe with terrible signal. So the games that stick around on my phone almost always share one trait: they work offline.
Emberhold Saga is my go-to example. It's a full RPG that never once demanded a connection during my playthrough. Save-and-quit worked instantly, progress was never lost, and there were no loading spinners waiting on a server. That reliability is worth more to me than fancier graphics.
The frustrating part is how many otherwise good games gate basic features behind an always-online check. Nothing kills momentum like hitting a wall because a server hiccupped on your commute.
When we review games here, offline behaviour is something we test on purpose. Toggle airplane mode, keep playing, see what breaks. It tells you a lot about how a game respects your time and your data plan.
